In the lives of PLHIVs, there reaches a critical stage where the infected individual is required to commence administering a medication known as ART or Antiretroviral Treatment. This is a medication/combination of medications that suppresses the concentration of HIV in a PLHIV. If adhered to correctly, the viral loads can be reduced to undetectable levels, thus keeping the virus at bay. PLHIVs under ART can go on to live healthy lives and are at a reduced probability of transmitting the virus to another individual.
Since 2004, ART medication is provided by the Sri Lankan government free of charge. More than half of Lanka Plus members take their medications monthly at their local STD clinics.
In order to encourage PLHIVs to maintain proper monthly clinic attendance, Lanka Plus, funded by the GFATM NFM, reimburses the traveling fees of all Lanka Plus members who attend clinics.
