Lanka Plus was founded in 1997 by the late Dr. Deshamanya Kamalika Abeyrathna to work for the welfare of People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIVs) in Sri Lanka. Since its inception, Lanka Plus has provided many services free of charge to its growing PLHIV membership and admits as a member, any PLHIV who is a Sri Lankan citizen. The services currently provided to its members include care and support, counseling, family and hospital visits, support for self-employment, financial support for children, access to ART medications and a drop-in centre facility. Lanka Plus partners with various national, civil society, regional and international organizations to carry out projects and provide its services and is also a contributor to the national health policy. Over the years, Lanka Plus has also been instrumental in fighting HIV related stigma in the country and raising public awareness regarding HIV. Apart from this, Lanka Plus also conducts positive speaking sessions where PLHIVs voluntarily share their experiences about living with the virus with a public audience.
